RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc., developer of monitoring, notification, and security solutions for System i, AIX, and Linux, announced today new enhancements to its MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole solutions that make it easier than ever to automate monitoring and notification to cell phones worldwide.
These new enhancements to the company’s popular systems management solutions put the power of GSM and SMS protocols into the hands of System i administrators, allowing simple and quick wireless distribution of messages to any cell phone in the world without the need for a paging provider, phone lines, or modems. Messages are received anywhere across the globe in seconds.”This update to Messenger acknowledges the change in how our customers communicate,” says Bytware CEO Michael Grant. “Today everybody carries cell phones or Blackberries, not pagers. With this enhancement, MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole can be used as a real company-wide text messaging system. We’ve cut the strings for System i.”

In addition to enabling easier wireless messaging, the GSM/SMS enhancements also eliminate the compatibility issues that can affect international users. In many areas of the world, variations in phone service can make it difficult to successfully set up automated notification to mobile devices. By sending messages phone-to-phone using standardized text-messaging protocols, Messenger now eliminates these issues. All that is needed is a number and a phone capable of receiving a text message. The receiving device does not even need to have GSM or SMS capabilities.

MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole with enhanced GSM/SMS features are available now. Comprehensive information about Messenger and free trials are available on Bytware’s website at www.bytware.com or by calling 800.932.5557.

RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc. (www.bytware.com), a world authority on securing and monitoring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of IBM iSeries systems, is pleased to announce the availability of Messenger 5.6. Since 1986, Messenger has been the leading monitoring and notification solution for the iSeries, and this enhanced version continues to extend the product’s power by incorporating various enhancements that have been made since June 2003 as well as a new disk monitor and automatic updating.

The new disk monitoring feature adds a new *DISK monitor type that will monitor the growth and available storage of your iSeries disk units. Runaway programs, large file installations, and extensive logging can all increase the amount of stored data and, if not monitored, could potentially lead to system slowdowns and even shutdowns. With this new disk monitor, you can create monitors to check the growth of disk units on an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly basis. When thresholds are reached, Messenger will trigger alerts notifying administrators of the impending disk space problems.

Another new feature—automatic updating—has been a popular standard feature in our StandGuard Security products and is now available for our Messenger customers. The automatic updating feature ensures that you have the latest features and fixes directly from Bytware by automatically downloading fixes and enhancements to the product. Updates are implemented as PTFs that are easily applied and managed automatically. There are numerous updates in the works for MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole and this feature makes maintaining Messenger smooth and easy for our customers.

Messenger 5.6 is now available, and special release pricing is available to organizations interested in replacing competitive solutions. Details and price quotes available upon request. For more information please call 775-851-2900.

RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc., announces that with the increasing popularity of SMS/GSM notification devices, specifically in North America, and with the recent announcement that AT&T is moving from TAP to SMS/GSM standards, Bytware’s Messenger products support of this emerging protocol has been enhanced.Bytware’s Messenger products now support SMS (Short Message Service) paging, using the GSM (Global System Mobile Communication) protocol. This service will not require a paging company and will allow the user to connect a cell phone (or other GSM device) directly to the AS/400 to use as a modem. You will then be able to send text messages directly to other cell phones and pagers, as well as reply to messages sent using the GSM protocol. The receiving device does not need to be GSM.

This enhancement to MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole 5.56 provides support for using a GSM mobile phone as a modem. Using a GSM modem provides the following advantages:

SMS messages can be sent directly without the use of a TAP or e-mail gateway.

System messages can be answered by replying to the SMS messages.

SMS messages can be sent to any other phone, or pager in the world without the need for multiple gateways. Even if the receiving device is not GSM, we have been able to send messages to multiple carriers and devices without knowing anything more than the device’s mobile number/phone number.

A cellular phone provides improved tolerance to power failures and phone line problems. Since GSM cellular modems send their information wirelessly, modem-to-modem incompatibility issues are eliminated.

Bytware offers a suite of monitoring and notification products tailored to managing events across single, multiple, and partitioned iSeries systems. The Messenger product suite includes MessengerConsole and MessengerPlus. Learn more about our monitoring, paging, and consoling solutions.

RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc., the leading provider of systems monitoring and notification solutions, announces that its MessengerConsole solution was recently granted the “ServerProven” certification by IBM.Well known as the industry’s leading systems monitoring and LPAR console management solution, MessengerConsole is a comprehensive and easy-to-implement consoling solution designed for centrally managing events occurring on local and remote iSeries systems, as well as across multiple partitions (LPAR management). From a single point of control, MessengerConsole streamlines the monitoring of events for all systems/partitions to one central console.

Systems consolidation and LPAR have drastically increased the demand for centralized event management. With the increasing demands on IT staff to guarantee 100% uptime, MessengerConsole is an ideal solution providing consoling, systems monitoring, message management, paging/e-mail notification, and statistical reporting features. The innovative MessengerConsole approach to embracing and improving consolidation (LPAR) management, as well as its exceptional customer satisfaction feedback are the key reasons that it was nominated for and granted ServerProven status by IBM. Ultimately, the IBM ServerProven certification benefits the customer because it helps them choose solutions with added confidence by reducing the cycle of “guess and test.”

RENO, Nevada—AT&T Wireless text messaging on the TAP gateway has been discontinued by AT&T as of August 31, 2003. As AT&T is now referring to this as an enhanced service, AT&T now offers two fee-based services for text messaging to both TDMA and GSM devices: 1) AT&T Wireless Enterprise SMS; or 2) EFI Unimobile Mobile Messaging.

AT&T Wireless Enterprise SMS connects your applications directly to the AT&T Wireless SMPP Gateway via Frame Relay or VPN. EFI Unimobile Mobile Messaging provides a direct connection to the AT&T Wireless SMPP Gateway. The AT&T Wireless SMPP Gateway provides the capacity to support large volumes of messages and provides more reliability and security features than ever before. For more information regarding the two alternative options offered by AT&T, please visit: http://www.attwireless.com/tap/.

Messenger Enhancement Supports SMS/GSM
Bytware values our AT&T customers and therefore has developed an enhancement to the Messenger product line that provides support for sending SMS messages. Using a GSM modem to send SMS messages provides the following advantages:

SMS messages can be sent directly without the use of a TAP or email gateway.

System messages can be answered by replying to the SMS messages.

SMS messages can be sent to any other phone or pager in the world without the need for multiple gateways.

Even if the receiving device is not GSM,	we have been able to send messages to multiple carriers and devices without knowing anything more than the device’s mobile number/phone number.
A GSM modem provides improved tolerance to power failures and phone line problems. Since GSM cellular modems send their information wirelessly, modem-to-modem	incompatibility issues are eliminated.

To view the requirements for SMS support or download the enhancement, please visit: http://www.bytware.com/support/auth1/mplus/sms.html. (Requires valid Bytware Messenger support ID and password.)

Bytware’s Messenger products offer the most inclusive paging functionality available today not only supporting GSM and SMS pager device types, but also all TAP protocol paging services, e-mail (SMTP) messaging, and workstation alerts. If you are an AT&T customer and wish to switch to another service provider that supports the TAP protocol, or if you would like to configure your AT&T device to receive e-mail messages, please contact our Technical Support staff for assistance or reference the instructions included in the online product documentation (PDF; 1.38MB).

RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc., the leading provider of systems monitoring and notification solutions, announces the addition of a ‘Groups-in-Groups’ feature to both MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole.

This enhancement was created to reduce the steps for configuring notification options, thereby improving overall notification functionality.

The added versatility of Groups-in-Groups ensures that messages are automatically routed to the appropriate people with the least amount of time spent on product configuration. For example, within the IS Department, you might have a Help Desk Staff and a Programming Staff. With Groups-in-Groups, you can now create a group pager called ISHELP that contains the pager names for all of the Help Desk Staff and a group pager called ISPGMR that contains the pager names for all of the Programming Staff.

Before the addition of this feature if you needed to page the entire IS Department, you would have needed to create two actions: one to page the ISHELP group and one to page the ISPGMR group. With this new enhancement to the Messenger products, you are now able to setup a new group pager called ISSTAFF that contains both group pagers: ISHELP & ISPGMR. Again, this reduces the amount of configuration necessary and simplifies your setup to free up your staff to handle their primary tasks.

It’s interesting how a product grows and new standards are set. This functionality has only recently been requested by several customers and in reviewing the justifications for adding ‘Groups-in-Groups’ we realized that it was something that should have come up long ago, yet it hadn’t. This is the benefit of having over 4,000 customers using the Messenger products. Although each customer has their own unique environment, they are all very similar in requirements, and in most cases the requests for enhancements are easily justifiable and beneficial to everyone. Customer feedback and enhancement requests are an important aspect to the growth of any product,” said Heather Richards, Bytware Product Specialist.

his new feature requires that you be running MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole version 5.56, and is available for download within the Bytware Support Central product site. Go to the Support Central main page and select either MessengerPlus or MessengerConsole. This is a protected area of the Bytware site and requires an ID and Password for access.
