Auditing Unused User Profiles
Security Primer: Top Tips for Protecting Your System i
The System i may be one of the most secure servers out there, but there are still security issues to consider. Most organizations have vulnerabilities that can lead to serious business risks within your security environment. It’s only a matter of time before something on your network is savaged by attack, so a solid plan to protect your data from threats is critical. Through expert articles, this E-Guide from TechTarget’s Search400.com explores the many components of System i security. Learn about solutions, trends, methods and considerations to be aware of. Get the Security Primer >

White Paper:
The Modern Virus Threat and Regulatory Compliance
The evolving threat from viruses is challenging the ability of IT management to keep up with security requirements and the ability of software developers to outsmart the criminals behind the code. As SOX-style legislation spreads to other countries, the international nature of today’s business world makes the challenge even greater. In this paper we examine the modern virus threat and how this threat can impact System i. In addition, we look at how management of the threat ties into the now all too familiar Sarbanes-Oxley law, as well as the emerging Japanese flavor of the same, known perhaps affectionately as J-SOX in its home country. With specific guidance from COBIT and NIST, this helpful resource can bring you up-to-date on the globalization of regulatory legislation and how best to mitigate the virus threat on your System i-based network. Download the free white paper >

Former i5/OS Security Architect Pat Botz launches new company (IT Jungle)
There’s a serious problem with the state of security in the IT industry, according to Pat Botz, former i5/OS security architect with IBM. That’s why he recently left IBM to work on this problem with his new consulting company, Group8 Security. To hear Botz talk about the state of computer security is a little bewildering. Instead of the latest technology, what he really wants to talk about is the disconnect between the decision makers in the corner offices and technical pros in the server room. Read Alex Woodie’s full article on IT Jungle and learn more about Group8 Security >

Clover Stornetta Farms calls Bytware products a “slam dunk”
Clover Stornetta Farms, a locally owned and operated dairy processor in Northern California, faced the need to improve security when it expanded its operations and moved business offices to a second location. It found the solution in StandGuard Network Security. By spending just 15 minutes a day over the course of a month, Clover was able to develop and implement the network aspects of its security policy without disrupting operations. When Clover’s IT Director Ken Kuhn combined this with Bytware’s MessengerPlus and StandGuard Anti-Virus, he found that he had a portfolio of System i products that were a “slam dunk.” Read the full case study >

Demystifying Security: A new approach to security from Pat Botz
To most in today’s hi-tech world of networks and regulations, security seems complex; and the solution is to hand the baton to the tech savvy and throw the latest software at the problem. But in reality this can be the least effective path to efficient and effective security. In short, they’re putting the cart before the horse. The truth is that security is really a business issue, not a technological one. It’s about finding the right balance between your level of risk tolerance and the cost of achieving an acceptable level of risk—and making the right business decisions along the way. In this free presentation from Group8 Security, former IBM System i Security Architect Pat Botz shows you a different way of looking security. Download the presentation >

Virus News:
McAfee untangles results of anti-virus comparative test
On August 8, at LinuxWorld, start-up vendor Untangle performed an anti-virus comparative test pitting nine commercially available anti-virus solutions against its own ClamAV-based anti-virus solution. McAfee untangles the results to reveal serious flaws in the methodology used in this test. Read McAfee’s report online.

Virus News:
300,000-threat mark reached five months early
At the end of 2006, anti-virus software leader McAfee—whose engine powers StandGuard Anti-Virus—predicted that the number of viruses and malicious code threats would reach 300,000 by the end of 2007. It appears that their estimate was quite conservative. We’re already there. The 300,000 mark was passed on August 1, 2007, when the 5088 DAT weighed in with 300,450 threats. The latest release, DAT file 5106 dated August 27, 2007, lists the number of threats detected as 316,329. This is an alarming development as the predicted number came to pass a full five months early, a signal that the rate of virus proliferation is increasing at an ever faster pace.

Education:
An Objective Approach to Security (Free White Paper)
i5/OS may be famous for security, but it doesn’t go far enough in protecting your system’s data; it doesn’t differentiate how the data being accessed can be used. Therefore, it’s wise to supplement your security with third-party solutions that secure how data can be used with network applications. transaction security and how to overcome them. Download the free white paper.

Education:
The Modern Security Threat and Regulatory Compliance (Free White Paper)
Download the free white paper.

Tech Tip:
Excluding an Object from being monitored
Do you need to know when a critical communications line is down? Messenger can monitor the Work with Configuration Status (WRKCFGSTS) display for lines, controllers, devices, and network interfaces for abnormal statuses. Here’s how… (Note: Your Support Central username and password are required to access this tip.)

Tech Tip:
Auditing unused User Profiles
User profiles are typically the central point of any security implementation because they identify a user’s authority to all functions and objects. By auditing user profiles, you can determine whether your security guidelines are being followed. It is recommended that you regularly produce and review an audit report for user profiles not being used. Here’s how… (Note: Your Support Central username and password are required to access this tip.)

McAfee Virus Definition Library passes 230,000 threats
Over the course of 18 years, the number of viruses and malicious code threats gradually crept higher and higher until at last it reached 100,000 in September 2004. Since that time the growth has been tearing forward at breakneck speed. McAfee’s DAT file-which powers StandGuard Anti-Virus-reached 200,000 last summer, and on February 28 the number surpassed 230,000 with the release of weekly DAT version 4973. McAfee projects 300,000 by the end of this year, highlighting the urgent need to protect all servers and systems with anti-virus software.

Outlook on Viruses and System i (MC Press Online)
If 2006 was any indication, the malware landscape won’t be getting better any time soon. New threats are emerging at the fastest rate ever, and the potential consequences are alarming. In terms of System i, the traditional view of the system as an impenetrable island is a recipe for disaster. Reset auto numbering in MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole
Messenger assigns a consecutive number to each *EMAIL page that it sends to uniquely identify that message, and the number can grow very large over time. If your cellular or paging providers charges per character for email messages, it could benefit you to reduce the number of characters by resetting Messenger’s auto-numbering periodically. Classifying events to identify potential security risk
The events generated by StandGuard Network Security version 2.3 are assigned two key values to aid in classifying their potential security risk. Viewable from the Security Event Log, these values can help you identify potential security risks and fine-tune your security policy. Here’s how to use this information to your advantage. Streamline security through an Object-based approach (MC Press Online)
i5/OS may be famous for security, but it doesn’t go far enough in protecting your system’s data; it doesn’t differentiate how the data being accessed can be used. One popular way of enhancing IBM’s built-in security is to analyze requests-or “transactions”-by parsing SQL statements using a network security application, but this method is time-consuming and requires constant maintenance. IBM uses a more elegant solution for its built-in security, treating requests as “objects” and eliminating the need to examine SQL statements. Find out how this approach can improve your security and save you time and money. Read the full article…

New product information available online
Do you rely on a specific Bytware product? Are you curious how other Bytware solutions can improve your system operations and security? The importance of configuring auto Bytware PTF updates
Bytware releases Program Temporary Fixes (PTFs) and/or enhancements to the StandGuard Anti-Virus and MessengerPlus 5.60 products from time to time. We strongly recommend that you automate program updates to take advantage of the latest program features as they become available. This ensures that you always have the latest fixes and enhancements. These PTFs are implemented in the same manner as IBM PTFs.

Both StandGuard Anti-Virus and MessengerPlus 5.60 are pre-configured to download the PTFs directly from Bytware’s FTP server and apply them automatically. All you need to do is test the update process and apply an automation schedule. For StandGuard Anti-Virus 1.11, use Menu Option 11 to test the upgrade process and then “Add a Job Schedule Entry” to automate it. For StandGuard 5.20 or 5.31, use Support Menu Option 4 to configure and schedule the upgrade process. For MessengerPlus 5.60, use Support Menu Option 10 to configure and schedule the process.

Is open-source anti-virus right for you? (MC Press Online)
These days, few users would think of running their PC or Windows servers without anti-virus software. Protection of UNIX, Linux, and even System i servers is also becoming part of corporate security policy. But the lure of a cheap elixir is a risky temptation that some users are seeing as an easy way to address the need. While free or inexpensive anti-virus may seem like an adequate solution, it is not. There are real dangers to using open source solutions, and the protection they provide is of little benefit-not much better than taking no steps at all. Here, we look at the realities of open source anti-virus solutions and how they can compromise your security. Read the full article…

Enhance security through monitoring & notification. (MC Press Online)
Security applications and monitoring/notification applications often come from different vendors, and as a result it is easy to view them as distinct and separate. However, the two go hand in hand, and monitoring/notification products play a significant role in security. While security largely centers around keeping would-be thieves or destructive viruses away from sensitive information, keeping a vigilant eye on activity and knowing immediately when something happens is essential to success. In this TechTip, we’ll look at how to combine traditional security solutions with automated monitoring/notification and real-time user monitoring. Read the full article…

The Essential Guide to IFS Security. (from iSeries NEWS)
The Integrated File System (IFS) is critical to the iSeries’ ability to operate in a heterogeneous network. IFS lets the iSeries serve as an archival store for ASCII files, which PC users can retrieve and manipulate using the traditional Windows file system. It also serves as a repository for Web-hosted files and applications, such as those written in Java, JavaScript, and PHP.

But to be palatable to these uses, the IFS must eschew the strong capability-based security architecture of i5/OS and descend to the lowest common denominator file system – one based on the much weaker, but simpler, Unix security model. And therein lurks a monster. Since the IFS exists on every iSeries, it makes a perfect chink in the armor for hackers to gain a foothold into your system. Thanks to its Unix heritage, IFS inherits many of the Unix security vulnerabilities that hackers already know, love, and routinely exploit.

To avoid becoming hacker chum in the Internet ocean, you must understand the IFS security architecture, learn how to manipulate its security features, and establish some basic auditing functions to help you catch intrusion attempts. Along the way you’ll pick up a few handy IFS management tips, and discover some of the power IFS gives your applications – which is what makes putting up with IFS security blemishes worthwhile. To start, compare the IFS security architecture with that of i5/OS. Download the Essential Guide from iSeries Network…

Changing an *EMAIL pager to an *ALPHA pager
Has your mail server ever gone down, rendering your *EMAIL pager useless? Here’s how to set up MessengerPlus to change the default pager from an *EMAIL pager to an *ALPHA pager… Note: Your Support Central username and password are required to access this tip.

Meet Messenger’s newest monitor: the Disk Monitor
The use of abnormally large amounts of disk is often the result of other problems-such as a runaway job, extensive logging, or the installation of a new program without the addition of more storage to accommodate it. Whatever the cause, the result is never good. Running out of disk space is a serious felony on System i. Here’s how Messenger can help keep you out of trouble… Note: Your Support Central username and password are required to access this tip.

Changes to FTP Handling in StandGuard Anti-Virus
In an upcoming PTF we have improved the V5R3 and V5R2 products by removing the dependency on Java for FTP and extracting zip files. If you are using automatic updates using FTP and our defaults, then these changes will be transparent to you. However, if you are manually downloading virus definitions and/or PTFs you will need to make some changes. To see details, please select your appropriate product version:

Identifying Potentially Dangerous Changes to i5/OS (MC Press Online)
It’s no secret that vendors sometimes play around with OS/400 and i5/OS to achieve functionality beyond that supported by a given release level. But what is less widely understood is that this practice of “patching” programs can introduce instabilities and security exposures to your iSeries. The Battle to Protect Sensitive Information (MC Press Online)
It’s impossible to use an Internet-connected computer today without being surrounded by threats from viruses, hackers, and malicious code, and there are many fronts in the battle to protect our sensitive information. If you haven’t yet taken protective steps, now is the time to do so-not only because it is key to overall secu rity, but also because regulations have begun demanding it. This article focuses on government and education, but provides information applicable to any industry. Read the full story…

Tech Tips:
Monitoring SAP on the iSeries with MessengerPlus
If SAP is running on the iSeries, each instance is represented as a subsystem. MessengerPlus can monitor those instances to help you ensure that jobs don’t get dropped, run within the time frame you expect, don’t eat up too much disk space, and more. Here’s how… Note: Your Support Central username and password are required to access this tip.

Using the StandGuard PRTEVT Command in a CL Program
StandGuard Network Security has a PRTEVT command that can be used to print event reports. You can run reports by typing STANDGUARD/PRTEVT, pressing F4, and filling in the current date. But wouldn’t it be nice to automate this process? You can, and here’s how… Note: Your Support Central username and password are required to access this tip.

StandGuard Recycle Bin Named Security Product of the Year
StandGuard Recycle Bin, the simple, easy-to-use solution that works much like the recycle bin found in Microsoft Windows to protect files located in your iSeries IFS from permanent deletion, has been named the 2005 Security Product of the Year by TechTarget’s Search400.com. As one judge put it, “it’s hard to find a reason not to run StandGuard Recycle Bin.” Find out more about this great utility…

Important Notice:
Changes to StandGuard Anti-Virus for V5R1 Support Policy
With IBM and McAfee dropping support for V5R1, Bytware supports the StandGuard Anti-Virus program code only and cannot provide support for operating system or scanning engine issues. These changes affect StandGuard Anti-Virus 1.11 only. The following restrictions apply:

IBM officially withdrew support for OS/400 V5R1 on September 30, 2005. Issues related to defects with the IBM OS/400 Operating System V5R1 are not supported beyond September 30, 2005. IBM’s release support can be viewed online at IBM’s website.

McAfee will withdraw support for the OS/400 V5R1 engine on August 1, 2006. Virus definitions released after that date will not be tested or supported for V5R1. After August 1, 2006, it is possible that a release of virus definitions may not be compatible with the 4400 McAfee Anti-Virus Engine. If that were to occur, you would be required to revert to the last supported virus definition files, and to disable any future automatic updating features of the product. The product will no longer be able to detect new viruses after August 1, 2006. However, the product will still be able to detect the 150,000+ known viruses that exist to date.

CGI Integrates Full Bytware Product Family for Better Operations
Building a Better Virus Trap
Not so long ago, viruses were just one of those little annoyances that come along with using a computer. But over the past few years, they’ve begun to target specific industries and serve as tools for real criminals. Unfortunately, changes happen so quickly that computer security policies struggle to keep pace. Whereas once a mere daily virus scan of a user’s PC could clean up the virus problem and a firewall could keep out prowlers, today a much more in-depth, multifaceted, layered approach is the only way to truly protect your valuable assets. Here’s a closer look…

Tech Tip:
Pinpointing Specific Entries in the System Audit Journal
MessengerPlus allows you to monitor the System Audit Journal for specific entries, including invalid passwords, object management, job tasks, adopting authority, security tasks, service tasks, and much more. Here’s how… (Requires a valid Messenger support ID and password.)

Tech Tip:
Using the Auto-Refresh Parm in PeekPlus
By using the Auto-Refresh Parm, you can tell PeekPlus how often to refresh the screen view. Here’s how to make this features work for you… (Requires a valid PeekPlus support ID and password.)
