Bytware, Inc. Expands StandGuard Security Suite to include Virus and Malware Detection Solution for Linux

Sunday, September 18th, 2005

RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc. (www.bytware.com), a global authority on IBM iSeries virus vulnerabilities, announced today the upcoming release of StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux. Linux and iSeries share a commonality: they both are popular platforms for file serving, as well as mail and web serving. Since the launch of StandGuard Anti-Virus for iSeries in 2003, Bytware has learned much about how businesses can be impacted by malicious code residing on file servers. Recent evidence proves that threats are increasingly targeting hosts as their launch pad for denial of service, data theft, and destruction. Perfect examples are the MyDoom and Zotob viruses, both of which took advantage of file sharing environments to attack the infrastructure of critical business and government.

Available October 2005, StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux is the second anti-virus member of Bytware’s growing StandGuard Security Suite that already includes intrusion prevention, access controls and authorities, user monitoring, vulnerability and threat mitigation, iSeries anti-virus, monitoring and notification, auditing, and recovery.

StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux is designed to scan directories for viruses and other malicious code, and to perform advanced containment, cleaning, and notification procedures. Again building on the strengths of the world-renowned and most respected anti-virus organization McAfee, Inc., StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux incorporates the latest McAfee scanning engine, making this a mature product backed by battle-tested technology, advanced heuristic analysis, and generic detection & cleaning.

Scanning engine features include:

  • Scans within compressed files
  • Decompresses and scans files compressed in packages such as PKZip, .LHA, and .ARJ
  • Detects and cleans macro and script viruses
  • Detects and cleans encrypted and polymorphic viruses
  • Detects and cleans new viruses in executable files and OLE compound documents
  • Detects and removes “Trojan horses,” worms, and many other types of malicious software (malware)
  • Upgrades easily to new anti-virus technology

Additionally, StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux includes:

  • Automatic download of virus definitions (.DAT files)
  • Automatic download of software updates and fixes
  • Built-in scheduling features for scanning and updating
  • Network-enablement
  • Extensive logging capabilities

StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux will support Linux on a stand-alone server. An added benefit to our iSeries customers is that StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux uses the similar graphical interface that is used for StandGuard Anti-Virus for iSeries.

StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux meets the recommended guidelines set in regulations like SOX and FISMA (Federal Information Security Act of 2002) to protect data. Guidelines set forth for anti-virus prevention strongly recommend that organizations deploy anti-virus software on all systems for which satisfactory solutions are available. Bytware is joining the many government and non-government agencies who are working together to educate organizations of the importance of deploying anti-virus software on all systems within their IT infrastructure and organization. This is the key to detecting, containing, and eradicating threats. Identifying host servers infected by malware is vital to containing malware incidents.

StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux is part of the StandGuard Security Suite offered by Bytware, Inc., which includes StandGuard Anti-Virus for iSeries, StandGuard Security, and StandGuard Recycle Bin. Bytware’s understanding of today’s malicious threats as well as our unique understanding of today’s security and vulnerability landscape is proof positive that Bytware, Inc. is a serious provider of real security solutions and knowledge necessary for protecting you when the next exploit hits.

StandGuard Anti-Virus for Linux will be available mid-October 2005. Bytware Releases Enhanced StandGuard Anti-Virus for V5R2

Wednesday, July 6th, 2005

RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc., developer of the award-winning StandGuard Anti-Virus solution for OS/400 and i5/OS, announced today that a new version of the application has been released for OS/400 V5R2. This V5R2-only version brings the advanced features previously available only in the i5/OS V5R3 version to users of the earlier OS release. Enhancements include: improved management of product and virus definition updates; an enhanced graphical user interface; the ability to work in mixed V5R2/V5R3 environments; menus in English, French, and Japanese; and improved configuration options.

The highlight of the new enhancements is the addition of Object Integrity Scanning (OIS), previously available only in the V5R3 release. OIS gives StandGuard Anti-Virus the ability to alert iSeries managers to changes made to IBM’s digital signatures by patched programs. Many applications modify the operating system in order to achieve functionality not available on a given release of the OS. Regardless of whether a “patched” program does something good or something bad, such programs can create potential problems for the integrity of the operating system.

In addition to being key to a healthy iSeries, awareness of modifications to the system is an important aspect of compliance with new regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley.
