Bytware Announces StandGuard 2.3: Comprehensive iSeries Security Without the Hassle

Monday, January 13th, 2003

RENO, Nevada—Bytware, Inc. formally announces StandGuard, the newest addition to its product line, and a new breed of iSeries Security with an innovative approach to ‘phasing-in’ security policies designed to protect your system and data from accidental or intentional damage or theft. Unique in its design, StandGuard allows you to implement your security policies in an existing operating environment, without disrupting your normal network-based business transactions and activities. To achieve this, StandGuard promotes a phased approach to implementation, beginning with an open trust-based policy, and progressively strengthening security by securing or turning up network services on a service-by-service basis.

It’s commonly known that the iSeries server has unparalleled security protection if you are using application and/or menu-based security when the server is accessed from 5250 terminals. However, network-accessible tools such as FTP and ODBC bypass your application and menu-based security systems unless you have fully implemented the built-in object level security features of OS/400. When a PC user utilizes their 5250 user ID and password in an application such as Microsoft Excel, and FTP that is built-in to every Windows-based PC, they will have unlimited access to your company’s data.

StandGuard allows you to secure resources – objects (files, databases and programs, for example), network services (FTP, ODBC, DDM and Telnet) and CL command, on your iSeries that are being accessed by end users running client applications on your network such as common desktop products like Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, IBM Client Access, and others. StandGuard controls access to (and functionality in) network services and system commands to protect your system and data from accidental or intentional damage or theft.

StandGuard provides many benefits:

  • Complements External Firewall Security
  • Protects Corporate Assets on Your iSeries Servers
  • Tracks Authorized Data Access to Comply with Legal Requirements or Corporate Policies
  • Logs Legitimate Activity as an Audit Trail
  • Protects from Insider Malicious Intent

StandGuard Key Features include:

  • Rules-based Security
  • Monitors and secures FTP, ODBC/SQL, Telnet, DDM/DRDA, NetServer (Network Neighborhood), Integrated File System (IFS), and CL Command Keywords
  • Services Monitoring and Security
  • Audit Journal Monitoring
  • CL Command Keyword Security

  • Actions
  • Alerts via an interface with Bytware’s MessengerPlus and MessengerConsole message management and paging alert solutions.
